Battle of Mollwitz

Today’s battle in the Eighteenth Century was Mollwitz, Frederick the Great’s first real battlefield experience where he fled the field. The Austrian cavalry rolled forward on the left flank and smashed th3 Prussian horse. It was at this point, despite personal bravery, Frederick retired from the field.

Historically, the Austrian cavalry then turned into the Prussian flank but were shot off by the infantry. The Prussians then advanced across the field and broke the poor quality Austrian Foot.

In the game, we classed the Austrian infantry battalions as Courage and Discipline 3. The Prussians also had artillery superiority.

However, in the game, the Austrian cavalry charge did a lot more damage and even managed to get one, short-lived squadron into the rear of the Prussian lines. All this slowed the coordinated Prussian advance allowing the lowly militia to target the Prussians piecemeal. The Austrian cavalry also pulled back to avoid becoming casualties and by Turn 9, there was no hope of a Prussian victory and they withdrew.

So, a tense battle and close to history.
